How To Implement Standardized Electronic Medical Records Across All Practices

July 31, 2008

Kevin, MD has a great post on the most important steps necessary to attain widespread adoption of electronic medical records.  Incentivizing practices to implement VistA (the EMR currently employed in the VA system around the country) is the most expedient solution to the EMR question.

However, tech companies currently developing EMR software and hardware will vehemently fight this.  VistA would steal all of their business.  I believe the best solution is to use VistA as the basis for all EMR systems (its code and architecture) and then somehow incentivze private industry to develop additional components to VistA and provide service and support for VistA systems.
